QUALIFICATIONS 

1. Must Pass Fingerprint Check
2. Must Pass Physical Capabilities Test
3. High School diploma or equivalent
4. One of the following:

          60 College Credit hours; or

          Associates Degree or Higher; or

          Missouri Para Pro Assessment Passing Score (before 9/23/13) per DESE 6/22; or

          Missouri Para Pro Assessment Passing Score (after 9/23/13) per DESE 6/22; or

          Completed Missouri’s 20 Hour online substitute training program and obtain substitute certification

5. Knowledge of basic subjects taught in schools, including math, grammar, spelling, language and reading
6. Basic instructional methods and techniques
7. Correct usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
8. Oral and written communication skills
9. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
10. Participate in training activities as required by the District

 

JOB SUMMARY

The ISS/Recovery Room Assistant will work within assigned classroom with responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of behavior students by assisting in implementation of plans for instruction, monitoring student behavior and providing information to appropriate school personnel.  The ISS/Recovery Room Assistant will assist with data collection and analysis.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The duties of the ISS/Recovery Room Assistant will include, but are not limited to the following:

• Work collaboratively by assisting teachers and specialists in assessment, academic and instructional support, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors and enhancing social growth of students in the school setting.
• May participate in IEP planning and assessment meetings to provide direct input and recommendations on student progress and needs.
• Provide direct assistance to the teacher in such activities as: implementing lesson plans, preparing instructional support materials, administering assessments and assisting in grading, working directly with students in small groups, providing individualized instructional and learning assistance and supervising students in and outside of the classroom.
• Exercises discretion and assures protection of student confidentiality consistent with District policies when communicating with students, parents, community members and other staff members concerning student progress and/or behavior.
• Oversee student safety (i.e. recess/playground supervision, bus duty, crossing guard duty, hallway supervision, etc.). Take steps to intervene when students are not in control, not in the proper location, or may be in dangerous or unsafe situations on an as-needed basis.
• Provide instructional support and tutoring to students in inclusion, pullout and one-on-one sessions.
• Document progress of students to assist teacher in assessing progress with education plans. Maintain, or assist in maintaining, student progress reports.
• Assist with appropriate behavioral intervention techniques for the purpose of ensuring a safe environment for the student and classroom.
• Attend meeting and in-service presentation (i.e. CPR, emergency procedures, crisis de-escalation, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
• Models positive behavior for students (i.e. inter-personal communication, processes, social interactions, etc.) for the purpose of providing educational and life skills training.
• Remain with student(s) at all times for the purpose of providing for the safety or students, removing student when necessary and de-escalating situations outside the classroom.
• Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, dress and appropriate professional manner for the work setting.
• Demonstrate effective human relations and communication skills.
• Adhere to good safety practices.
• Ability to understand and adhere to all District rules, regulations and policies.
• All other duties as required or assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

• stand, walk, sit and talk/hear;
• occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl;
• occasionally push, pull or lift up to 50 lbs; and
• be able to see, including close, distance and depth perception.
